If you’re with me on this blog adventure, you’ll notice that I’m still in the discovery phase. I’m not sure what it is yet, what it’s supposed to be. A blog that exists in the spirit of service sounds nice, but who am I? What do I have the authority to offer?
The short answer is nothing and everything.
I could give specific advice from my limited experience, a very niche brand of lifestyle choices that are either going to resonate with you or not. I could, but would I be helping as many people as I’d like to?
I could go in the direction of doing, writing, and saying whatever I feel like, reflecting the daily ebbs and flows, thoughts and emotions, the whimsy. Now, that feels even more off the mark of being of service, but then again, maybe the idea warrants a deeper look. It requires us to look at the function of art.
Art is a mirror; what it reflects depends entirely on the viewer. While the artist may be able to use their craft to sway an audience to see a few things from a certain point of view, whoever consumes the art ultimately defines its meaning. It follows that whatever I decide to write here, with whatever motive or intention, will be interpreted by the reader in whatever way they need. And by the simple act of providing a looking glass, to glean whatever significance, I am being of service. The less I try to purposely produce whatever I think that may be, the more successful I’m likely to become.
I will serve in the same way that you serve. Your being-ness, your mere existence, is an undeniable service to others. You provide opportunities for comparison and learning, growth, and experiential contemplation. Even when you rub someone the wrong way, it’s of service, an invitation to understand oneself better.
You & I make a mark on this world by simply being in it, and that’s the spirit in which this blog is written. I am going to trust that whoever is receiving it will be served in whatever way they need to be, which is (spoiler alert) out of my control.
"I will serve in the same way that you serve. Your being-ness, your mere existence, is an undeniable service to others." Love this!
